At AthenaK12, we believe that when you become a learner, you become a better teacher. It is essential that your learning experiences be the kind that inspire you to be a better leader and teacher. As you model a mindset and enthusiasm for learning … taking risks, making mistakes, being lifelong learners...you will create a classroom and school environment where students and staff can do the same.

We work with each client to collaboratively create a training plan that best suits your needs.   First, we focus on understanding the needs and interests of the target audience, defining learning objectives and establishing desired outcomes.  Then, using our knowledge of the specific context and culture of the classroom, school or district, trainings are developed and delivered by members of our experienced team.  Finally, we solicit feedback in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the training at meeting our set objectives.  Follow up steps are planned with the client to deepen the impact of the training and embed the learning into practice.

PROGRAM REVIEWS

At AthenaK12, we believe that knowledge is power.  Program reviews offer insight and recommendations around curriculum, instruction, special populations and personnel.    Over the course of on-site visitations, we observe a number of classrooms and interview teachers, specialists and administrators, and district leaders as applicable. In addition, we gather curriculum documents, student work and performance data.  By examining various aspects of the program area, we identify strengths and gaps; ultimately making recommendations to impact student achievement and growth.

PROGRAM REVIEWS

  • FOCUS AND PROCESS

Our comprehensive review includes a focus on:

    • Curriculum.
    • Pedagogy.
    • Academic Rigor.
    • Data collection and progress monitoring.
    • Personnel.
    • Scheduling.
    • Culture & Climate.
    • Belief Systems of Professional Staff.
    • Professional Development.

For each area, we delve deeply into subtopics, asking questions such as:

    • Is the curriculum horizontally balanced (comprising a wide range of genres, topics and themes) and vertically progressive (each step building upon previous steps)?
    • Is there a clearly articulated scope and sequence?
    • Does the curriculum emphasize deep goals: inferential thinking, critical thinking, evidence-based writing, positive habits of mind (effort, creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, autonomy)?
    • Is the curriculum sufficiently differentiated to meet the needs of diverse learners?
    • Are there alternative pathways to successful learning?

As part of the review, we collect information using five different methods:

    1. Classroom observations.
    2. Interviews of teachers, specialists, principals and program directors.
    3. Examination of curriculum documents.
    4. Examination of student work.
    5. Analysis of performance data.
