Meeting Diverse Learning Needs: Evidence-Based Practices for Inclusive Instruction

This 15-PDP online course is designed to support educators in meeting the diverse academic, linguistic, and social-emotional needs of students, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners. Grounded in evidence-based practices, the course integrates principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiated instruction, and inclusive practices aligned with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) expectations.


Participants will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to design and implement instruction that ensures access, engagement, and meaningful participation for all learners. The course emphasizes practical application through lesson design, analysis of student needs, and reflective practice.


By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply principles of Universal Design for Learning and differentiated instruction to support diverse learners.
  2. Design and implement inclusive instructional strategies that address varied readiness levels, interests, and learning profiles.
  3. Utilize appropriate scaffolds, accommodations, and supports aligned with student needs and IEP requirements.
  4. Develop and use formative assessments to inform instruction and improve student outcomes.
  5. Reflect on instructional practices to promote equitable access and high expectations for all students


  • Total PDPs: 15 PDPs in Special Education
  • Synchronous Instruction (Live via Zoom): 10 hours (4 sessions × 2.5 hours)
  • Asynchronous Learning: 5 hours (application-based assignments and reflection)
