The Basics for Deep Understanding of Fractions

This session will introduce the progressions of how fractions can be taught for really deep understanding. Often students don’t get enough time to play with fractions to develop a full understanding of the complexity of a fraction. We want to create opportunities for students to develop a feeling for fraction size. We will:

  • explore partitioning and iterating with manipulatives,
  • use number lines to show fractions as numbers and values,
  • compare fractions so students can relate the numerals to their physical size and to their representation, and
  • investigate equivalence conceptually.
